The Department of Defence is seeking volunteers living in areas close to RAAF Base Amberley to participate in an extended noise monitoring program in their homes.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann is encouraging local residents to attend a Defence community information session being held this Thursday, where they can learn more about the program.

“The noise monitoring program is voluntary, but it will be an important tool for Defence to help identify and quantify the impact of training and operations from RAAF Base Amberley. It will inform the potential for a comprehensive noise management scheme for people living in areas close to the base and in flight paths,” Mr Neumann said.

“Pending the outcome of the program, a scheme providing financial support for residents adversely affected by excessive aircraft noise will be developed to help cover the cost of measures in residents’ homes. Similar programs have seen the installation of items like insulation, window glazing and air conditioning, for example.”

Households located within the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) 30 contour for RAAF Base Amberley may be eligible to participate in the program.

The information session will outline the noise monitoring program, seek residents’ feedback, and develop a timetable for noise monitoring in eligible households willing to participate.

Eligible residents will be able to register for the noise monitoring program during the information session and Defence representatives will be available to answer any questions.

Mr Neumann said he was proud to have announced a new program to address aircraft noise around RAAF Base Amberley with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles during the recent federal election campaign.

“I know noise from air force jets, like the Super Hornets and Growlers, has been a big issue in this area and some local residents have been calling for it to be addressed for a long time,” he said.

“That’s why I fought so hard over many years for a solution, and why I’m so pleased to have worked with the Deputy Prime Minister to get this outcome. It’s a big win for this community.

“I can assure local residents I’m determined to see this through, and the Albanese Government and Defence are committed to working with them to roll out practical measures to manage excessive aircraft noise and improve their quality of life.”

In addition to noise abatement measures, Defence will also investigate a new Defence noise model for military fast jets, and work with the Queensland Government and Ipswich City Council to explore new planning regulations to support better noise management.

RAAF Base Amberley is Defence’s largest operational air base, and home to the Royal Australian Air Force’s F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets.
