Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann has announced funding of up to $5000 to the Fernvale Lions for the construction of a disability access ramp at their Fernvale Community Hub and Emergency Response Centre.
The Fernvale Lions will receive the funding under the Blair Stronger Communities Programme Round Two.
The Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) provides grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 to community organisations for small capital projects which improve community participation and contribute to the vibrancy and viability of local communities. Grants must be matched by cash and/or in-kind funding from the organisation on at least a dollar-for-dollar basis.
Shayne Neumann said that supporting the application made by the Fernvale Lions was important for the local community.
“Today’s funding announcement means that the Lions will be able to construct disability access ramps at their Fernvale Buildings," Mr Neumann said.
“As well as giving the Lions a base for their local operations, these buildings also operate as an Emergency Response Centre for use in storms and natural disaster.”
“As last year’s storms demonstrated, having access to accommodation, support and assistance during extreme weather events is nothing short of essential. With this upgrade, we can ensure that people with a disability or mobility issues can just as easily get help and aid in these times of need.”
Mr Neumann said he has been a long-term supporter of the Fernvale Lions and the work they do in our community which can be felt right across Ipswich and the Somerset Region.
“The effort and dedication shown by the Lions in getting these buildings up and running has been nothing short of remarkable.
“A great deal of hard work has gone into providing such an important service to Fernvale residents, and I’m delighted to have been able to help such a great group of people.
“With today’s funding coming in addition to a further $20,000 secured earlier in the year, I’m extremely proud to have supported this project right from the very start.”
Mr Neumann said that applications for funding under the Stronger Communities Programme are assessed by an independent panel of community members from the Ipswich and Somerset Region.
“I was pleased to lend my support to the independent community assessment panel’s positive recommendation to support the Fernvale Lions application to ensure they can go ahead with this essential upgrade.”
