A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will continue building Australia’s future, investing $200 million in fixing the notorious intersection of the Cunningham Highway and Ipswich – Rosewood Road at Amberley.

Labor will fix this important intersection to improve safety and bust congestion for Ipswich locals.

This election commitment will deliver a grade separated interchange and improve access to RAAF Base Amberley, Australia's largest operational military air base.

The Cunningham Highway carries around 20,000 vehicles per day at the Ipswich – Rosewood Road intersection. There are 2,000 vehicles per hour in the morning peak and over 15 per cent are trucks.

Ipswich – Rosewood Road carries around 8,000 vehicles per day with around 1,300 vehicles per hour turning right from the highway towards the RAAF base during morning peak.

Queues can reach up to 3 kilometres and it has been the site of a number of crashes, with the acute right turn making it very difficult for motorists to identify gaps in the oncoming, inbound highway traffic.

Delivery of this project is contingent on the Queensland Government matching this funding.

The final design will be subject to the outcome of a $20 million jointly funded State and Federal business case which is underway now.

With the business case and early works expected to be completed this year, today’s announcement is the next step in that work and provides the community the certainty it needs that this project is progressing.

This is one of many investments Labor is making to improve the road network in Greater Ipswich, including $134.5 million for the Warrego Highway – Mt Crosby Road Interchange Upgrade and $42.5 million for strengthening works on the Bremer River Bridge, as well as an additional $20 million for critical safety upgrades on the Brisbane Valley Highway in the 2025-2026 Federal Budget.

Quotes attributable to Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The Amberley and Ipswich community have been calling for a long-term solution, and that is what we’re delivering today.

“We’re improving this intersection for the community, for freight, and for the more than 5,000 RAAF workers who need to get in and out of Amberley every day for work.

“Too many crashes have occurred on this road, and only an Albanese Labor Government will fix it.”

Quotes attributable to Treasurer Jim Chalmers:

“As a Queenslander I know how important this road network is and as Treasurer I know how powerful Shayne’s advocacy for his community is.

“Labor will fix this important intersection and help people get home sooner and safer.

“This is a substantial investment in this local community, a big investment in the local economy and it wouldn’t have happened without Shayne.

“This election is a choice between Labor that's all about easing the cost of living and Building Australia's Future or the Liberals who are all about cuts to Medicare to pay for nuclear reactors.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Blair Shayne Neumann:

“The Amberley Interchange is the most important infrastructure project in my electorate, and I have been advocating long and hard to fix this notorious bottleneck and black spot.

“This funding commitment builds on the business case I secured last year to look into options like a grade separated interchange, and I’m so proud to be delivering this today.

“It will improve safety, boost freight connectivity and ease congestion for local residents and defence personnel at RAAF Base Amberley.

“Fixing this intersection will save lives and take the pressure off traffic in this rapidly growing part of our community, making it easier to get to work, school and home safely and on time.”
